Zampella’s new studio, Superdata 2019 review, Team17, more!

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from and welcome to your daily gaming update for Friday, January 3rd. My friends I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that is looks like everyone is back from holidays and we have a ton of stuff to talk about today. The bad news is that it’s already Friday, so we’ll have to wait until Monday for them to get off the weekend. Nonetheless let’s just jump right in.

There is some exciting news coming our way from Vince Zampella, who will now be leading a brand new studio under EA DICE, though that name will likely change soon. Apparently he’ll be working on an original IP that has not yet been revealed, and the studio will be completely seperate from DICE and Respawn. If you don’t know about Zampella, he is a highly regarding figure in the industry, having worked on Medal of Honor, then co-founding Infinity Ward to work on Call of Duty, then become the CEO of Respawn, which launched Apex Legends, and of course Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Apparently he’ll be staying at Respawn as a “head coach,” but day-to-day responibilities will be at this new studio. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye on this because he has a great portfolio and reputation, and hopefully something great comes out of this.

I talked recently about Superdata, who provided some digital sales data for the month of December 2019, well now they did a full year in review. So for 2019, the games industry grew 4% with a record $120 billion dollars spent in a year that didn’t have many new market movers like Fortnite. Of that $120 billion, 80% of it was spent through F2P games, and 60% of it was on mobile. Of all video games, Fortnite was the top-earner for the second year in a row, taking close to $2 billion, and Superdata notes that while Fortnite actually has less players than League of Legends, those players are twice as likely to spend money on the game. They also noted that Apex Legends had a groundbreaking marketing strategy, achieving 50 million dowloads faster than any other PC or console game in history. And the last thing I’ll throw out there is that FIFA 19 was the top premium game, followed by Modern Warfare and GTA V.

Publisher Team17 have acquired a new studio, Yippee Entertainment, for around 1.4 million pounds. Yippee is known for creating the game Chimpact, and is currently working on the Commandos 2 HD Remaster. This is now Team17’s second acquisition, following them getting the developer of The Escapists back in 2016. If you’re a fan of Team17 then this is good news, they have more people to work with on games like Worms or maybe even a new IP.

Hey everyone, just wanted to leave you a warning that spoilers of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake have been leaked onto the internet, so if you were hoping to avoid them, keep a close eye out. Essentially they’ll be coming out with a demo for it soon, and people managed to get info from the demo beyond what the demo provided. While the story elements are probably the same from 20 years ago, there are some changes that you might want to keep a surprise, including details about the final boss. That being said, I hope you’re excited, it’s coming in three months!

Alright so as I mentioned earlier, it is Friday, which means I’ll be back with the news on Monday. However tomorrow is Saturday which means it is listener interaction day, and the question I’d like you to answer for me, is what did you get for Christmas? The more related to video games it is, the better. Send it my way on Twitter @gaming_observer, or DM me on Facebook anything works. That’s going to be all for today, thank you very much for tuning in, happy new year, and happy gaming everyone.
