TGO After-Show

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here and welcome back to The Gaming Observer for Friday, April 24th. We are closing out the week here with a few strong stories, let’s take a look.

Reviews released for XCOM: Chimera Squad

The reviews have just gone out for XCOM: Chimera Squad, which is the standalone spinoff of the mainline series, we talked about it last week. Critics are saying that it is a generally good game, it’s more XCOM which I think is what a lot of people were looking for, but it definitely has unique positives and negatives. For example, they generally liked the initiative system, where instead of each half performing all of their moves at once, turns are taken on a unit by unit basis. On the flip side, they were generally disappointed with the new Breach mode, which allows you to set up all of your soldiers outside of the location and have them begin battle all at once. Kat Bailey from US Gamer especially felt that Firaxis needed to lean even more into the new concepts that were introduced to the game. Either way, I think the overall positive feelings can be understood by what Charlie Hall from Polygon had to say about it, and I’ll end it with this, he said the game “doesn’t quite rise to the same level of excellence as War of the Chosen. But it does manage to successfully remix the franchise’s most vital elements into something fresh. The result… is substantively different than every XCOM game that has come before. And, with a retail price of $19.99 and a launch sale price of $9.99, it might be the best value in video gaming since Valve’s legendary Orange Box.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 headed to Xbox Game Pass

Here’s an interesting one, the Xbox Game Pass is going to be introducing its newest flagship title to the service, Red Dead Redemption 2. Now that’ll only be on the console game pass, not the PC pass. Either way, that’ll be arriving in two weeks, that’s May 7th, and on the same day, GTA V will be leaving the service. You’ve heard me say it on this show before, the Game Pass is super good value. Games like RDR2 are on there, but also a ton of super high quality games that you may have not even heard of but are totally worth playing. And that applies to both console and PC, which each have their own unique libraries but both still bring a ton of value. Check it out, you won’t regret it.

Battlefield V getting final update in June

Battlefield V is going to be having it’s final content update this June, barring any production disruptions. It’ll of course include new content, weapons, and tweaks that are customary for the game, and after it releases, they’ll essentially be going into maintenance mode. You know they’ve done a lot to support that game over the past two years, and its had its peaks and valleys, but I imagine we’ll have news of a new Battlefield coming soon.

Epic Games Store releasing For The King for free

Final story for today, the Epic Games Store is continuing its weekly free releases, this time around it’s the game For The King. I’ve heard very good things about this one, it’s a turn based roguelike, it’s going singleplayer and online-cop, and this giveaway in particular will have all of the expansions. I’m looking forward to checking it out, and next week it’ll be Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crashlands.

Hey folks, before we take it home today, I just wanted to say a big hello to all of you who are joining us via podcast. It looks like my show may have been picked up in the algorithm, and I just wanted to give you a brief rundown here. This show has a few thousands listeners tuning in every single day, and most of them are listening via Amazon Alexa, which has a feature on there called Flash Briefings. As you may have noticed, I create this show on a daily basis, news happens every Monday-Friday, there are special shows on the weekends, and then every Tuesday is a regular 45-90 minute news show with my cohost Katosepe. Also, immediately following this is what I call the TGO After-Show, which for Amazon listeners is a totally optional unscripted show where I just talk about what is on my mind. It’s kinda like having a second Youtube channel. Anyway, thanks for being here, and feel free to reach out any time. You can find all my contact info on thegamingobserver.com.

Alright everyone, thanks very much for joining me. I’d also like to thank Drako and Angela for leaving me a 5-star reviews on Amazon, as well as Brandon and Macaqueattack for the reviews on Apple Podcasts. That’ll be all for today, and I’ll be back tomorrow with the news, until then, Happy Gaming Everyone
