Take-Two financials, Detective Pikachu, more

How is it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from The Gaming Observer, and this is your Daily Gaming Update for May 14th, 2019. For links and a transcript, head over to thegamingobserver.com.

Take-Two Interactive fiscal year results

Fiscal year results were released of 3 different companies today, so I’ll spread them out this week and start today with Take-Two Interactive. As expected, the company has performed exceedingly well. Revenue is up 50% to $2.6 billion, with their income increasing by 92% to $333 million. Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 24 million units thus far, and there was a great focus on the online component looking forward. Otherwise, they of course mentioned the NBA 2K series and better than expected numbers for GTA V. Perhaps most interesting of all however is that Civilization VI significantly outperformed their expectations, particularly thanks to the Nintendo Switch port, and with the expansion being the best performing add-on in the whole series. So of course, Take-Two is doing just fine for themselves.

Detective Pikachu breaks records for video-game movie

The film Detective Pikachu opened in cinemas this weekend, recording the best ever opening weekend of any video game movie in the US. Earning $161 million in ticket sales across the globe, it outearned Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the previous record holder. A notable exception to this record is that China still has Warcraft as their countries top earner, making $156 million in the first five days.

Minecraft celebrates 10 years with giant map

Minecraft is ten years old this year, and Microsoft is celebrating with an absolutely humungous custom map. Of course it’s totally free, you just have to fire up any version of the game you own, and there’s multiple easy ways to acquire it. It’s essentially a giant museum, showcasing all of the things they have made in the last 10 years, how it evolved, with pamphlets explaining it all, and htere’s even a few mini games and easter eggs. I’ll be checking it out soon, but really this thing is massive, you should boot up the game if you haven’t in a while, or buy it for the first time, it’s 50% off right now.

Rage 2 releases. A Plague Tale: Innocence releases

There are two games coming out today, March 14th. The first is Rage 2, developed by Avalanche Studios and id Software, published by Bethesda. Most everyone is praising gameplay and combat, but are disappointed with story and combat. I’d definitely check out video of this before you buy it. The other is A Plague Tale: Innocence, developed by Asobo Studios, published by Focus Home. If you’ve seen any gameplay of this you’ll know it’s beautiful, critics are loving it, I recommend you check this indie game out.

That’s the news, thank you so much for tuning in! As always I want to also thank Brandon, who supports the show through Patreon. I am Adrian Simple, see you tomorrow, and Happy Gaming everyone!
