Reflecting on 500,000 plays | Saturday Show

Saturday Show

TGO After-Show

Today, I reflect on hitting 500k plays. It’s been a crazy ride, but I’m particularly interested in how TGO moves forward from here.

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here and welcome back to The Gaming Observer. It is Saturday, April 4th, it’s a wonderful day here in Toronto, I’m feeling pretty good, so let’s start the show.

Hey, I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to take a bit of pivot today, as I like to do on these weekend shows. If you are here just for the video games, then you are welcome to skip today’s episode, because today I want to talk a little bit about The Gaming Observer, this show. Normally I would do this on the TGO After-Show, which you can easily enable in the Alexa app, but I figured I’d take today to do just a bit of reflection. I just wrapped up looking at the analytics for March 2020, and I can now say that this show has been played over half a million times. My voice has been projected into people’s homes 500 thousand times over the course of the last year and half. I cannot even begin to comprehend this. I think that number really speaks to how powerful this platform is, in a time where not a lot of people even really know about the flash briefing feature. Almost all of you have discovered this show, found value in it, and then stuck around for months on end. You have no idea what that means to me, and if you had told me this was gonna happen 2 years ago I would’ve laughed in your face. So thank you to all of you who listen, from those who have never spoken to me before, to those of you constantly interacting with me. It truly does mean the world to me.

And so with that, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what the Observer is past this show. A lot of times I really feel like I’ve struck gold in some sense with the daily updates, but I’m skeptical of how this plays out long-term, and whether or not there is something sustainable here. Because the reality is, I’m not a businessperson or an entrepreneur. I hate social media, I hate the idea of having to build a brand, you know I pretty much just hate all of these things that could eventually turn the Observer into a job. Obviously we’ve seen some early success with Patreon, where people have been giving me money for nothing in return ever since the start of this show. I haven’t been advertising or encouraging that avenue in any way, because I want to save it for when I want to turn this show into an income, but nonetheless it shows a potential future for me. Outside of that though, the problem is that I have little to offer besides these shows and cultivating some kind of community like what we have on the Discord server. So with flash briefings being so volatile, I have to think about how I expand without hating the process, and while actually creating something valuable to you as a listener.

One thing I feel like there is a lot of potential in is doing a longer-form podcast, which I’ve done in the past with my cohost Katosepe. I feel like those shows were even stronger than what I do here, and that’s something I really want toe explore over the course of this year. The other idea I had was creating some kind of talk show. A weekly, or more frequent livestream that is short but full of action. So we would talk about news, we could have listener call-ins to give their questions or comments, we coud play music. Almost like a radio show. And I feel like there could be something cool in that format because people have really been loving the After-Show, which I didn’t expect, and something like this on Twitch would be a nice blend of both of these shows that I make.

So anyway, that is what is in my head, thanks for letting me divert from video games today, I hope you don’t mind. And once again, a tremendous thank you for all of your support, it has been an absolute honour. Tomorrow I’d like to do a mailbag segment, so if you could, please send me a message telling me what video games you are playing during this era of coronavirus craziness, and why. I will read out the most interesting answers here on the show, so please make sure you give the reason why you are playing that specific game during this specific time. I feel like we need some positivity and shared gaming experiences right now. I’ve created a mailbag channel in the Discord where you can leave your message, or send it to, or DM me in any of the usual places. Once again, thank you very much for joining me, and until tomorrow, Happy Gaming everyone.
