NPD US April data, Saints Row and Maneater reviews, more

TGO Daily

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from The Gaming Observer and welcome back to your daily news update for Monday, May 25th. I hope you had a wonderful weekend, let’s take a look at everything that happened in the land of video games over the last few days.

NPD US sales for April

NPD released their monthly report on sales in the gaming industry, and boy oh boy is this a big one. Tracking sales on hardware, software and accessories totalled $1.5 billion dollars, which is a record high for the month of April, eclipsing the $1.2 billion generated in 2008. So that’s the combination of everything, but software alone also had a record month, and hardware alone did its best month since 2008. For the month of April, the Final Fantasy VII: Remake was the best selling game, followed by Call of Duty and Animal Crossing. For all of 2020, Call of Duty is #1, followed by Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy. So in one month, Final Fantasy became the third best selling game of the year. Not only that, but it now has the best launch month in Final Fantasy history, beating out the records set by XV. So a super big month for the gaming industry driven by three very popular games, of course very happy to see that, and I guess we’ll see how May turns out some time next month.

Saints Row The Third: Remastered reviews

Saint’s Row: The Third Remastered has been released, and the reviews are out. And honestly, you get a pretty different perspective of this game depending on the review you read. Some people love the remastered graphics and framerates, others say that’s its not enough. Some say that returning to the gameplay in 2020 is a little dated, others say that its just as fun as it was in 2011. So I think my recommendation to you is going to be that if you think the gameplay will hold up, since it didn’t change much in the remaster, then you’ll probably enjoy it. If you’re someone who is nitpicky about the tech specs though, then do some more research before you pick it up. Otherwise, you know Saints Row is a classic, and definitely if you haven’t at least experienced the franchise before, this is probably a good place to start.

Fortnite plays movie trailer, soon to play full Nolan film

Fortnite is experimenting with their party mode once again, most recently doing a movie trailer for the newest film from Christopher Nolan, Tenet. They have also confirmed that they’ll be doing a live screening of an old Christopher Nolan film, people have been speculating it’ll be Inception because of its 10 year anniversary, but it could be anything. It could be Batman, because Fortnite has worked with them before. Either way, super cool to have an entire movie playing within a video game, for free, and have that be a totally normal thing. Fortnite is doing some fun stuff, and I hope it works out for them.

Maneater reviews

Maneater officially released last Friday, developed by Tripwire, this is a game where you play a shark that is trying to eat as many people as possible. Oh, and its an RPG. Yes, the developers of Killing Floor made this game, and it’s so fun to watch. You can even level up your shark to get some really fun stuff, like electric fins. I think normally you hear a concept like this and say that its too gimmicky, but a lot of people are liking the game, with main criticism being that its too repetitive. But it’s got plenty of high scores because the moment-to-moment gameplay is apparently a lot of fun, so maybe check that out if you want something silly. Shoutout to Alex for pushing this one on my plate.

Okay my friends, thank you very much for tuning in, and thank you to Tiffany, Brett, Stephen, and SB for leaving me 5-star reviews on Amazon, that means a whole lot to me. Folks I hope you have a great day, back tomorrow with the news, and until then, happy gaming everyone.
