My thoughts on the Activision-Blizzard news from this weekend

If you took a glance at the news this past weekend you probably saw at least one article on how Activision-Blizzard reported that their mass layoffs could negatively impact their business. I wanted to clear the air on this situation, because there seems to be misconception about what exactly they wrote here. Most websites are reporting on this event as if it’s some juicy story, you know, that Activision Blizzard is admitting that it might’ve been a bad idea or something. Here’s the thing folks, this is something that they reported under the risk factors section of their annual 10-K form that they have to submit to the SEC. There are literally 40 other risk factors in this section, which say things like the fact that they depend on servers which might crash, or that fluctuating exchange rates could negatively impact their business. They just let go of 8% of their total workforce. If they didn’t put this on their 10-K as a risk factor, people would be asking questions. There are so many things that you can’t predict when you let go of that many people, and an investor legally needs to know that estimates and assumptions have been made through this process. So don’t let pcgamesinsider.biz convince you that this is anything but standard procedure for the company. This sort of thing has been on lots of other 10-K’s, it’s just being written about now because there is so much controversy going on with the layoffs.

Dead or Alive 6 season pass ridiculousness

Dead or Alive 6 came out last week, and their season pass information just got released recently. Listen to this, so the base game is 60 American smackaroonies, right, but the season pass is $93. $33 more than the game itself. This is insane. So what’s inside the season pass, alright check this out, 2 new characters, and 62 costumes. Kotaku prices this out to $15 per character, and $1 per costume, which might actually be worth it to you when you break it down like that. Here’s the real kicker though, listen to this, quote “Downloadable content not included in this list above may be released during the same period, but it will not be covered by this Season Pass 1.” I don’t even know what to say about this whole thing, so I’ll just let you come to your own conclusions.

That is the news, it was a pretty slow weekend. I’d like to thank Daniel and Quinn who left me 5-star reviews on Amazon. I’d also like to thank Katosepe, who subscribed to me on Patreon at the $3 tier literally as I was recording this outro. You can find Katosepe over at videogameoftheday.com, and he has his own flash briefing that you should check out. You can also find me on Twitter, @gaming_observer, or send me an email, info@thegamingobserver.com. As always, this update was produced in part by Brandon, who funds the show through Patreon. Thank you very much, have a beautiful day, and Happy Gaming everyone!
