How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here and welcome back to The Gaming Observer! To my American listeners, happy fourth of July! Lets talk about some video games.

Okay folks so today I want to talk about something pretty interesting that I learned about, it’s called JRPGJuly. And I guess the way to describe this is as a gaming community event where people play JRPGs in the month of July and share their experiences with each other on social media. If you go on Twitter and search #JRPGJuly, you’ll see a whole bunch of people talking about it and sharing their content around it. I thought this was such a cool idea because I think JRPGs are obviously a very beloved genre, something that people will rally around and seek out, and have nostalgia for. I wouldn’t say it’s up there with like fighting games or anything like that, but certainly there’s a commonality among the people who enjoy them. I took a look at the hashtag on Twitter and it was pretty cool, I gotta say, I learned about a lot of games that I haven’t heard of before, saw some screenshots, some videos, some articles. So hey, if there is a JRPG that you’ve been wanting an excuse to play, or maybe you need some inspiration go check that out.

Myself, you may or may not know this, I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 9 over the past few months, and I’m probably going to be able to finish it this July. I’m really excited about that because it will be the first Final Fantasy that I actually complete, despite having played a number of them, and honestly probably one of the few JRPGs that I’ve completed as well. In the past I have played Final Fantasy 10, 13, and 15 but never managed to get past maybe the 10 hour mark of all of them. I’ve also tried to play games like Tales of Berseria, one of the Dragon Quest games, the beloved Chrono Trigger, unfortunately I just never ended up finishing any of them. This time around though, Final Fantasy 9, I’m in the final stretch of the game and I’m still super excited to see what its got in store for me. But you know there’s definitely reason for that, because this game is absolutely tremendous. I mean if you’re looking for something that is packed to the brim with a strong narrative, then FF9 is going to do it for you. The character arcs, the dialogue, the settings, it all hooked me in a way I wasn’t that I wasn’t expecting. Something that especially took me by surprise was just how strong the characters are, and how they change over the course of the game. And I mean, the game isn’t perfect, you know the combat is fairly easy and slow, and some of the world traversal can be annoying, but otherwise it’s the first 40 hour game that I’ve been able to sustain in a long time, which I think is awesome. When I’m done with it, the next JRPG that I will probably play is Persona 4 Golden, now that it’s on PC, but that won’t happen until I’m done playing The Witcher 3, so we’ll see how it goes. Unless any of you would like to recommend a fairly short one, because I know there’s probably some good short ones out there.

So hey folks, if you are interested in participating in this JRPGJuly, like I said check out what people are saying on Twitter, I’d also like to recommend a website RPGamer.com. They are dedicated to covering RPG games, and will have plenty of content around this event. Not only will there be articles, but they also have a Discord server where people will be sharing their thoughts while they play, which you can find at RPGamer.com/discord. Just for disclosure, one of the owners of that site is an awesome member of our community, but I promise they do some really cool things that you’ll want to check out.
