Daily Gaming Update

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from The Gaming Observer and welcome back to your daily news update for Wednesday, June 24th. I am super excited to be here, I hope you are as well, let’s get into it.

We have just received what I believe is the first indication of the popularity of the Epic Games Store. You might remember that they recently did a promotion called The Vault, where they gave away some of the biggest games for free, including GTA V, Civ IV, and the Borderlands Handsome Collection. Well, thanks to that promo, they were able to hit 61 million monthly active users. They also had a average peak concurrent of 13 million, which for the record Steam’s all-time high for concurrent users is around 23 million, so not all that far off. Of course it helps that Fortnite goes through the Epic Launcher so that’s certainly going to inflate the numbers a bit, nonetheless, it’s a strong start for them. I’m looking forward to what they have store.

Bloodstained Curse of the Moon is officially getting a sequel. This game was the 8-bit companion to Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, it was made as a way to tease the upcoming game. It’s very reminiscent of the original Castlevania games. Well, now it’s getting a sequel, it’ll be very similar to the original but apparently much longer, one of the main criticisms was that it was a little too short. It’s going to be arriving on PC and all consoles, and should be arriving soon. That’s Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 2.

Speaking of sequels, we know that Rogue Legacy has one in store for us, and now we know that it arrives in Early Access on July 23rd, so next month. They showed off some more gameplay and my goodness does it ever look like a tremendous improvement on the original game, I’m very much looking forward to it. The graphics are overhauled, the characters look much more unique, and its just as ridiculous as the first one liked to be. I am absolutely going to be covering this game, so keep an ear out, I’ll let you know how its going. That’s Rogue Legacy 2, July 23rd, it’ll be around $20.

Bloober Team is currently in talks to be acquired or merged with another company. These are the folks who have gotten themselves into a little horror niche, they’ve done Layers of Fear, Clair Witch, they’ve got The Medium coming up. Now they are a Polish studio, and they’ve narrowed it down to 6 different companies, three in the US, two from Poland, and one in the UK. Unfortunately that’s as specific as the report offers, but Bloober has previously been under a parent company and went independant in 2008, so they do have some experience in that environment. Nonetheless, exciting stuff.

Hey if you are an aspiring game developer, you should head on over to the Unity website. They are permanently giving away premium learning tools at no cost, which includes 350 hours of courses and tutorials. They did this for a 3 month period last March, and I guess it went super well for them, so now it’s becoming totally free all the time. Now I don’t know if this is for the rest of time or just until COVID is not something that is front of mind, nonetheless it should be a helpful resource for you.
