EA financials, no Switch Pro in 2020, Warcraft 3 hits new record, more

Daily Gaming Update:

TGO After-Show

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from thegamingobserver.com and welcome to your daily gaming update for Monday, February 3rd. I’m excited back here talking about the news, so let’s get into it shall we?

EA Q3 financials

Electronic Arts reported on their Q3 financials and we got a lot of information nuggests out of it. First of all, they made a big note that digital revenue, not physical, is 70% of their overall revenue. So they are all in on digital, also noting that the games they sell are essentially a 50/50 split between the two. In quarter 3 they had three games release, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville, Need for Speed Heat, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The only thing we do know from those games is that Star Wars Jedi has sold around 8 million units, and is expected to hit 10million by the end of Q4. Looking to the future, they currently have no games planned for Q4, but they have 14 games planned for the entirety of their next fiscal year, which is double what they’re doing in this fiscal year. The last thing I will note is that they are still pretty lukewarm to the idea of bringing their games to the Nintendo Switch, as they have been for a while.

No Switch Pro in 2020.
Animal Crossing themed Switch announced.

Something that I missed from the Nintendo financials a few days ago is that they confirmed that they have no plans to launch a new model of the Switch this year. So that’s basically squashing the rumour of a Switch Pro. Also in regards to the Switch Lite, they said that there is still room for growth, despite selling two million units in less than two weeks. They’ve also announced a brand new Animal Crossing themed Switch, which is definitely my favourite one so far it’s really well designed and I wish I didn’t have a Switch already so that I could justify buying it.

Warcraft 3: Reforged now record lowest user score on Metacritic

On Friday I talked about the dissappointments of Warcraft 3: Reforged, well it looks like that has been reflected quite signficantly on Metacritic. It now has the lowest user-scored game on the site, with an average of 0.5 out of 10. I think its impressive that this managed to pick up the record of lowest score considering all the other games that have received internet outrage over years. Nonetheless, that’s another evidence point that you should be careful before you purchase.

Dota: Underlords exits Early Access on February 25th

Dota Underlords will officially be leaving Early Access on February 25th, after eight months in the program. That date will be the start of the game’s first season, will introduce a battle pass, and a bunch of new content. Apparently the popularity of the autobattler genre has been dying down over the last 6 months, so maybe this will pick it back up.

Discord removes library, activity feed, and game launcher

Discord has gotten rid of a few of their features, namely the library, the activity feed, and the universal game launcher. If you ever bought a game from Discord then you keep the library tab so you can access those game, unless you choose to disable. This will tidy up the program a bit, and I do commend the company for listening to feedback.
