E3 highlights/favourites

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from The Gaming Observer, and this is your Daily Gaming Update for June 18th, 2019. Head over to thegamingobserver.com for links and a transcript. There isn’t a ton of news today, so I figured instead, how about I tell you some of my personal highlights from E3, I hope you don’t mind.

So there was a whole lot that happened at E3, naturally, so I can’t possibly go over all of the exciting things. But these are a select few games.

A lot of my favourites came from the PCGaming Show. Griftlands from Klei Entertainment was a big one – these are the developers behind Don’t Starve and Oxygen Not Included. Griftlands is a deckbuilding rouguelike. It’s a new but similar artstyle to the usual Klei game, it seems like they’re set up for some pretty interesting mechanics. Truthfully after the success of Slay The Spire, I think we’re going to see a lot more deckbuilders coming around. Another one from the PCGaming show is called Telling Lies, which is a spiritual sequel to Her Story. It’s mostly an interactive narrative, but essentially you navigate a bunch of video clips to try and piece together the story. As you listen to each clip you try and think of keywords which can then be cross referenced with the entire database of videos. I thought it was going to be super annoying with Her Story, but it ended up being one of the most fascinating mechnanics I’ve ever seen. Telling Lies is going to be a murder mystery, which I think will make it all the better. Definitely definitely take a look at this one.

If you’re a fan of PlatniumGames, creators of Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, you should look to their new game Astral Chain. It’s definitely a genre that’s a bit of an acquired taste, so it won’t be for everyone, but this should be a solid entry for them. Also from the Nintendo conference, take a look at Empire of Sin, I talked about it some time last week. It comes from Romero Games, the very well known husband and wife duo John and Brenda. It’s a turn based strategy game with a mafia setting. They had a great trailer and I look forward to seeing what they can pull off.

Okay just a few more I want to mention here. We know very little about it, and the studio behind it, but there was this absolutely fantastic trailer for a new game called 12 Minutes. It was my favourite thing of E3. Essentially it’s a groundhog day concept where the day resets when your character gets murdered. So the objective is to stop the murder, naturally. And finally, of course I’m sure you’ve heard about it by now, Baldur’s Gate III is coming from Larian Studios. So excited for that one and I can’t wait to see it.

That’s all the news for today. Thank YOU for tuning in, thanks to John for leaving me 5-star review on Amazon, and thanks to Brandon for supporting the show through Patreon. My name is Adrian Simple, see you tomorrow, and Happy Gaming everyone!
