Control not being a free next-gen upgrade made people mad, and more!

Daily Gaming Update

How’s it going everybody, Adrian Simple here from The Gaming Observer and this is your daily news update for Friday, August 21st. Now today was actually exceptionally slow for news, so I’ve only got two stories for you today. Let’s see what they are.
Alright so first of all, the game Control has been in the headlines the past couple of days, sadly due to some controversy. I mentioned a while back that if you want to get a free upgrade to next-gen consoles, you actually have to purchase the new Ultimate Edition of the game. If you just have the standard edition with the Season Pass, then you won’t get the upgrade. Well this ended up making a lot of people pretty upset, and 505 Games responded with this, “We spent several months exploring all of our launch options…and no decision was taken lightly…Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can’t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair.” So what people have taken from this statement is “hey, we can’t give everyone the next-gen upgrade, so nobody is getting the next-gen upgrade.” I wouldn’t say that that’s entirely accurate either, but it’s how people are taking it. Unfortunately I don’t have much else to say on that, other than that fact that I agree that the decision was fairly disappointing. Ultimately though, these large pro-consumer moves like free upgrades are relatively recent in terms of popularity and acceptance, so the whole industry isn’t going to be able to adapt to it instantly.
The only other thing I want to talk about today is Hitman 3. The first thing you should know is that the PC version of the game is going to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. Also, starting next week, you can pick up the first Hitman remake for free, which is incredible I highly recommend you do that. The other Hitman 3 news is from a few days ago, but they announced that they will be removing the multiplayer mode they introduced in 2, and they will be reforming the elusive contracts. Probably a smart move on both fronts, I know the elusive targets especially had a few criticisms. And I’ll remind you that Hitman 3 arrives in January for PC and all consoles, current and next gen. I hope you’re excited because I very much am as well.
Since we have some time left here on the show I thought I’d talk about this weekend just for a moment. So the first thing is that I think I want to do a mailbag segment, except this time I wanted to turn the tables and do it Q&A style. So if you have a question for me that you would like me to answer here on the show, then please go to the Discord server and ask it in the mailbag channel. You can ask me about video games, about the news, about this show, really anything that you’ve been curious about. The other weekend show is going to be me talking about Rogue Legacy 2 which just recently went into Early Access, so you can forward to that if you’re interested. And then probably on Sunday I’m going to have an announcement about TGO, with a full explanation the following Monday.
