Defiant Development shutting down

Defiant Development, the studio behind the Hand of Fate games, are unfortuantely shutting down. Their Australian studio was founded in 2010 as a reaction to the 2008 recession. At that time, major publishers pulled out of the country, leaving a lot of talented people without places to work. So they made their own companies, and Defiant was one of them. In the announcement, the founder said that they always tried created games that nobody else would, setting out not knowing where the journey would take them. But, “That is a risky way to make games, and we knew that. When it succeeds it delivers things you could never have considered possible. When it fails, it leaves you without a safety net.” It’s an unfortunate end for a company that a lot of people seemed to love. They gave us one last hurrah by releasing some footage of the next game they were working on, titled A World In My Attic. It actually looked pretty good, so it’s too bad it’ll never see life. My condolences to all those now searching for work out there in Australia, and best of luck with your journey!

Nintendo now fixing joy-cons free of charge

The class action lawsuit that Nintendo is facing regarding joy-con drift seems to have made an effect. VICE Games got their hands on an internal memo sent to customer service reps, and they’re making some changes. First, they will no longer charge to repair Joy-Cons, and they’re refunding everyone who has already paid. Bonus, customers won’t have to provide proof of purchase, nor have it covered under warranty. So these are concrete actions that they’re taking, and I hope it continues past whatever happens with this lawsuit. Be sure to get in touch with them if you need repairs, they’ll cover everything.

Nintendo/Tencent conference set for August 2nd

Speaking of Nintendo, they just announced a joint press conference with Tencent in China on August 2nd. This will be the first official update since they announced their partnership. Obviously this will have something to do with the Switch’s distribution in China, so for the very few of my listeners that are from there, Stephen especially, keep your eye on this.
